I still feel so overwhelmed with a number of things on my to-do list in order to build my author business. Here are just some of them:
Research which email list to choose
Set up email list
Create a lead magnet
Figure out where to host the lead magnet file!
Need some plugins for the site- how do I do that?
Oh yeah and I need to write
I need to write blog posts to document and share what I am learning
I need to finish editing my book
Start building my launch team
Go through my 200+ unread messages in my email
Go to the gym
Clean up the house
…..And that’s how I get overwhelmed!
Because there just seem to be so many things to do and so little time. In fact the more I think about it the more there is to do.
And this does not include the other creative projects I am running!
So why do I feel overwhelmed?
Is it the amount of things to do?
The overwhelm comes in because we focus too much on the 10th step rather than focusing on the very next step we need to take.
And this is just another form of procrastination. We put off what we must do next and get carried away with all the other things we also need to do.
But progress only comes when we get to the finish line. And every step on the journey counts.
So in my case, I only need to focus on writing my 500 words for the blog every day. And I need to edit my book.
I have 26 chapters. So maybe I can edit 6 chapters a day. And if I do more than this then it’s a bonus!
The marketing and launch team stuff can come a bit later. I can work on that once the edits are completed and sent back to the editor for the next round of editing. That’s when I will have some time to do the other stuff like marketing.
So that’s the trick with beating overwhelmed.
List out all the things you need to or want to do (as it’s easier to track when on paper otherwise your to-do list is left swimming around in your head causing the anxiety that leads to overwhelm). Then pick the 3 post important steps you need to take to get you closer to publishing your book and work on the first task in your list to completion.
Once completed, go back to your list, revise it if necessary and then work on the next item on your list. And repeat the process.
Give each task a deadline.
And then get to work.
Ignore the fear and anxiety. Because you are doing the work. And doing the work, word by word, book by book is what makes you a productive author.
Doing the work beats the feelings of overwhelm because you are taking action towards your goal.
And no matter how small the action is, as long as you are moving forwards, you are building precious momentum which is what you need at this stage
Don’t compare yourself to other writers who are putting together huge marketing plans and launch teams. These writers have been there and done it many times before.
You too will also be at this stage soon. But for now, my dear friend just keep your head down and focus on the very next steps YOU need to take for YOUR author business.
And for me, that is to keep editing my book to completion. This action will get me one step closer to finishing my book.
My second action is to write my 500 words a day. This is to help me become a committed writer. and to develop a writing habit. These 500 words can be words written for my blog or another book.
Whatever it is, I just need to write 500 words so that I practise the habit of writing. I practice confronting the fear and self-doubt all writers, creatives and artists face.
Remember, at this stage, consistently is more important than quality. Quality will eventually follow consistency.
So what is the very next step you need to focus on and complete this week? Please share below.
