Now that the manuscript and file is ready my attentions have moved away from writing and onto the publishing process and producing the actual book (how exciting this is finally happening!!!)
Many people will correctly assume that I will have and produce a physical print book. As someone who has always wanted to write a book, holding my own book in my hands is something to show ‘I did it’.
Actually feeling the book in my hands, flipping through the pages and knowing that I created this. That’s certainly something I want.
It will even be more amazing when I see my book in the hands of other readers, in the library or even in a book shop. And yes, it’s solely to satisfy my ego!
But I am also an entrepreneur, and I am building a business around my writing. So that means in today’s age I also need to get digital.
This is why I am also producing an e-book version for my book. So why am I creating an ebook as well?
Here are the benefits of producing an e-book which I advise every author to do
#1. You should prioritise the e-book more than the print book if you are serious about creating a living from your writing.
There is a minimum cost of producing an e-book. Once you have your book file, ready it is just a matter of uploading the book to digital outlets such as Amazon, Kobo, iBooks.
There is minimum extra effort involved in producing an e-book so get this done now
#2. You make higher margins on the e-book
Printed books will always be more expensive because it’s using more effort and resources.
It also works great for price comparison. On a digital store front such as Amazon, people can see the price of a physical book and an e-book side by side. The e-book price will always be lower in price, but you make higher profit margins on it.
Showing the price comparisons in this way will make more people purchase the digital ebook- you make a higher profit, and the reader pays less. It’s a win-win situation!
#3. E-books are easier to distribute for reviews
If you are looking for a review, it is as simple as attaching the file to an email and sending it to your beta reader, or you could use a service like Book Funnel to send the file digitally straight to their preferred device.
But with print books, you need to get the book printed, posted and shipped out to the person. The postage costs involved can be quite pricey if you’re sending the book to multiple readers around the world.
I am also doing POD- which is Print On Demand. I won’t be printing a tonne of copies in advance (the traditional way of doing it).
Instead, I will use POD which allows only one copy of a book to be printed when it ordered. Amazon Createspace provides this on-demand service.
Why have a print book?
I am going to have a print book just for ego reasons! It will be nice to have it on my desk where I can look at it every day which will be a constant reminder that I accomplished a dream goal!
I completed and finished this project. I worked through the pain and the emotional ups and downs. I fought through self-doubt, fear and frustration, and I actually completed it!
I achieved one of my dream goals which is to write and publish my book.
Also, as an entrepreneur, I am thinking about my book as a product– how many more products can I create from a single asset?
My one book will now be turned into 2 separate assets; an ebook and a print book. I have created 2 revenue streams from one asset!
