I am a coach and also use a coach to help me to identify and hit my goals.
My current coach, Nico Curia, explains in today’s post the importance of having clear goals and knowing your ‘Why’.
Read on to discover how you can make huge changes this year, how a coach can help you to achieve success faster and Nico’s special offer for you.
Did you know that only 8% of people who set up goals at the beginning of the year succeed in achieving them?
That’s a 92% failure rate – and I used to be one of them!
What about you? Did you achieve the goals that you set for?
Have you achieved the body and health you were looking for? Did you get the promotion you wanted? Did you find the love of your life? Have you grown spiritually? Do you feel more confident than last year? Are you closer to writing and publishing your book?
Or is it more of the same… same old same old?
Have you ever wondered why is it so difficult to keep motivated with one’s goals? At the end of the day, we can’t blame anyone but ourselves.
My conclusion is that it’s a combination of five things:
1. We live in a fast-paced-instant-reward time
We want results now (with minimum effort), but we underestimate how long some things take. Frustration sets in when the reality doesn’t match our expectations, and so we give up.
2. The goals are unrealistic
They are too big, or there are too many, and the reality is different from what we have imagined.
3. The goals are not meaningful.
If they are superficial and not important to you, you are more likely to give up.
4. There isn’t enough thought and planning given to how to achieve the goal.
5. There is a lack of focus and perseverance
As soon as it starts getting hard, chances are you will start to waver. You need to keep focused and push for that extra mile!
Four-Steps Goal Method
I don’t want this to happen to you, so that’s why I have decided to share with you my four steps for working out any goals – and how to achieve them:
1. Identify the areas in your life you want to change
If you haven’t seen Simon Sinek’s TED talk, I invite you to do so. This is a brilliant talk on why is so important to understand why you want to do something.
As an author trying to write your book, you need to ask, ‘why am I writing this book?’.
To find your why, use the Wheel of Life like the one below, to carry out an assessment of every aspect of your life. Highlight in one colour
Highlight in one colour where you feel you are now in the different areas of your life. Then highlight in a different colour where you would like to be.
The main purpose of this assessment is to see where change are most needed in your life and to reflect on WHY you want to get to that place.
Ask yourself honestly whether the change you are trying to achieve is meaningful for you or are you trying to please others?
I believe that to have a successful life; one needs a balanced life. Take a look and see whether you are achieving this in your wheel.
2. Decide how you can achieve those changes
For this step, use a mind mapping technique. It’s a very straightforward and visual method that allows you to brainstorm all the possible ways to achieve your goals.
After brainstorming, select those that are doable and finally put them in order. It will look something like this:
Break down each goal into the steps you will need to take to reach the target.
For example, if your goal is to write a book, break this down into sub-steps that are achievable and “bite-sized” e.g., write the introduction.
3. How to achieve your goals
Now take 12 x A1 pages. Each page represents a month and each day is of the size of a post-it.
Stick each page on the wall by quarter: January, February, March… and so on with all the days of the month.
On each Post-It, write down the goals you identified in the mind mapping exercise in Step 1 and stick them onto the calendar.
Be realistic about how long things will take and make sure you break your actions down into manageable steps.
You will have the flexibility to move things around till you get to a place where your year is mapped out, and you have a realistic and visual plan for the year.
If for any reason you can’t achieve your goal in time, don’t give up on it. Move things around again.
Also feel free to use colour coding so that the steps toward achieving a specific goal are in the same colour as the final goal.
4. Hire a coach
My fourth recommendation is that you hire a coach who can help you find what’s meaningful for you and keep you accountable. A coach can change your life forever.
If you have struggled with achieving goals in the past, now is the time to try something different. My invitation to you is to take immediate action.
We all have “blind spots” – things that hold us back that we can’t see. Find a coach who will help you uncover your blind spots. Find a coach who can help you get the results you are looking for in your life. You won’t regret it.
Finally – vague goals produce vague results! Make sure you are clear about what you want and why.
Here’s to your success in 2017 and beyond.
