September 22nd officially marked the beginning of Autumn here in England.
Usually, I don’t like when the weather turns cold and the nights get darker. I much prefer to bask in the sunshine and spend time outdoors.
But this time around, I have decided to embrace the seasonal change rather than resist it.
Life is all about going with the flow and any resistance we create only causes pain and suffering to ourselves.
So if you are not looking forward to the darker nights, take a look at all the things you can be looking forward to and are grateful for. Because no matter what or where you are, there is always something remarkable to be grateful for.
So here are a few reasons as to why you should embrace Autumn before Winter fully kicks in.
#1. Not every country gets to experience autumn!
Those closest to the equator receive a consistent amount of sunshine all year around. So think about all those people who are missing out on autumn!
#2. Letting go of the old to make way for the new
Autumn is characterised by the falling of the leafs (hence where the American term ‘fall’ comes from). These leaves fall because they have done their job during summer and are now shedding the dead weight.
They will take a period of deep rest so that they can produce wonderful leaves again for the coming year. Life is a cycle and it has its stages.
Take a look at your own writing schedule. Do you need to also put time aside to rest and nurture your creativity before an explosion of creativity for the summer?
Some people are seasonal writers. In fact, I think we all are but we just don’t realise it.
Nature does not bloom 365 days. Neither do we create non-stop for 365 days.
Just as nature needs to shed its leaves and rest over the winter season, we also need to take care of our writing and take time out to rest.
#3. Cosy jumpers and hot chocolate!
You can look forward to all the things you couldn’t do in the warmer months such as snuggling up into a warm bed with a great book, drinking hot chocolate and sharing quality time with loved ones over cups of tea and cake!
I’m actually excited and welcoming autumn to come into my life.
Life is easier when you are not resisting it. And the same goes for writing. Don’t resist what wants to come out of you. Write to your heart’s content and write what your heart wants to write. This is the only way your authentic voice can surface.
My Autumn goals
This autumn I plan to finish editing my non-fiction book on how to find your passion and purpose in life. I will also be playing around with some creative fiction ideas. I think autumn will be the perfect backdrop to allowing those ideas to simmer and bubble away.
Do the seasons affect your writing? Are you looking forward to autumn starting?
