Every Author Entrepreneur should think about having a web presence in terms of an author website. This is part of your Author Platform.
If you are just starting out and find all this ‘Author Platform’ thing overwhelming then just keep it simple to begin with.
As a starting point, I would suggest all authors have at least a basic website which is your little place on the web.
This is where people will come to when they search for you. Having a website as well as profiles on Amazons Author page etc will add more credibility to you as an author.
If you are just starting out (or the thought of websites and technology terrifies you) then keep it simple. You can set up a quick website at places like WordPress for free.
You can then add a few pages such as:
An About page: this is where you can tell your readers a little about yourself and what you write about. A few goods ones I came across are listed below for inspiration:
Showcase your products: Use this page to list out the books you are writing or perhaps the book you are planning on writing.
Think like an entrepreneur, your books are not just books but products.
Contact page: You can put information here on how your readers can contact you. WordPress have some inbuilt forms that capture queries and contact details from readers or you can list your email address (but spell out the email address to prevent robots from capturing it and spamming you i.e myname@mybusiness[.] com.
Add a couple of sharing icons for social media. Again WordPress has some nifty plugins that can help you do this quickly.
However, there is one thing I would stress your site needs to be: Make sure it is mobile optimised. All websites can be accessed on smart phones but being ‘mobile optimised’ means that the site adjusts correctly to the smaller dimensions of a smaller smart phone screen. This makes it easier for the reader to use, navigate and stay on your site.
Google are now penalising websites that are not optimised for mobile phones. More and more people nowadays are accessing the internet through their mobile devices. I am certainly one of those people and I quickly leave a site that won’t open on my mobile. The future is going mobile so it will work in your favour to have your site mobile optimised.
Author entrepreneurs need to be thinking about their long-term strategy one of which includes having a website that can be accessed on smart phones.
Google allows you to check if your website is mobile friendly. Click on the link below, pop in your website and let it perform a scan.
My results are here!
I’m not surprised by the results considering my site is a paid theme from Word press which specifically said it was mobile optimised!
So this is just a very small check you can do but something I think is an important foundation stone in setting up your Author Platform as part of your Author Entrepreneur journey. Don’t worry about having the best looking site, but just make sure people can view it properly on a mobile device.
The next step to think about is to actually own your own website. This means paying for the domain, hosting and preferably a paid theme (which typically have a few additional features than the free themes). This site is self-hosted and I also use the Beautiful Genesis Paid theme which you can get here.
Take Action Now: Is your author website mobile optimised? Run the google test to see if your site is mobile optimised. If not, search for mobile optimised WordPress themes now.
