The following is an excerpt from my upcoming book Escape The Cubicle: Quit The Job You Hate. Create A Life You Love.
This is taken from Chapter 5. You can read the first part of chapter 5 here if you missed it last week.
Take 100% responsibility for your 50%
The number one secret to living a life with purpose, passion and happiness is to take 100% responsibility for your life and the decisions you make.
This is what Alain de Botton refers to as being “the author of our own ambitions.” Once you take responsibility for your thoughts, choices and actions, you retain your power.
When you blame other people or external factors, you are giving away your power. Blaming makes you powerless to change the situation, whereas taking responsibility empowers you to make changes.
The external world only accounts for 50% of the way your life is. But you have a 100% ability to change the things you have control over, which are your thoughts, actions and behaviours.
You don’t live in the world, the world lives in you, and the world you find yourself in is a direct reflection of what is going on internally within you.
For example, if you think life is unfair and nothing is going your way, it’s likely that you will blame external events or other people for the way your life is.
But if you take 100% responsibility for your life, then you will see that you can make changes by changing your attitude and perceptions through your thoughts and actions.
I could only see that I was able to create a life that was more in tune with what I wanted when I allowed myself to dream beyond my corporate cubicle.
I stopped blaming my circumstances and external situations.
I let go of limiting self-beliefs.
Instead, I took 100% responsibility for where I was in my life and decided to change my thoughts and actions. This is because my old thoughts had got me to this place. So I had to change them in order to get me to where I wanted to go.
The importance of purpose
You are probably reading this book because you feel some discontent in your life.
Something is missing or lacking in your life.
Maybe you’re in a job you hate and you want to do something different.
Perhaps you don’t have a job and have no idea what to do with your life. Or maybe you feel like you are a slave to whatever life throws at you and you feel you’re getting washed along with the waves.
Or maybe life is OK but you know it could be better. That it could be amazing.
After a decade working in the corporate world, I felt I had lost my spark. I didn’t feel alive.
Coupled with working long hours, dreadful bosses and multiple bereavements thrown in for good measure, I woke up to the voice screaming inside of me saying, ‘GET OFF THIS MAD PATH BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE’.
I was on autopilot, drifting along with whatever came my way. I didn’t have a direction or bigger goal I was working towards.
At that point in time, my only goal was to get through the week till the clock hit 5pm on a Friday. I was literally counting down my life.
