I genuinely believe there has never been a better time to be an Author Entrepreneur (or an indie author or Authorpreneur as others call it).
An Author Entrepreneur is an author who has mastered both the craft of writing and the art of marketing their books to the right audience of people.
Author entrepreneurs are business savvy and understand how self-publishing is now a viable business model. You can make a very good living from your writing through self-publishing.
Being an Author Entrepreneur requires slightly different skills and characteristics from a person who just self-publishes books for fun. I have listed them out below. Read through them and think about which skills you already have and which skills you perhaps need to develop further to help you progress on your author journey.
Author Entrepreneurs are willing to be daring by sometimes writing in multiple genres. They look outside the box and are excited about the endless new opportunities and possibilities being made available everyday in the publishing space.
Author Entrepreneurs are not scared to write across different genres, or indeed creating their own new genres (campus-lit in India is a romance category based on college campuses in India!). Writing fast and publishing even faster to the wider world helps you become even more of a fearless writer.
Willing to Try Things Out
Author Entrepreneurs treat the whole process as an experiment. They are not afraid to try out new tools and techniques. They keep the ones that work and ditch the ones that don’t work. And then they create new hypothesis and go and experiment again!
Author Entrepreneurs are business savvy and understand that as writers we are licensing our work. So a book is not a book but a product. And that one product can be turned into multiple different products such as an e-book, print book, audio book, online course etc What would have been ‘just one book in a bookshop’ to an ordinary writer is now a multi-product with a global reach.
Author Entrepreneurs build a platform from which they can reach out to their readers and more importantly, their readers can reach back directly to the author. This means the Author Entrepreneur is closer to her readers and knows what she wants and can anticipate what she may need.
This allows us, as writers, to write and cater specifically for our market. Being the Creative Director of our own writing journey means you can make the changes yourself and not have to cut through multiple layers of red tape at large traditional publishing corporates who are big but slow. Instead, you as an Author Entrepreneur are leaner and faster. We can be more responsive to the market and our readers and make changes with the click of a button!
Action Men / Women
Author Entrepreneurs are usually people who genuinely want to add value into the world by creating something of value. That is my primary motivation to write. I want to add value into this world by creating a body of work I can be proud of.
I want to be a contributor and not a consumer in this world. And this propels us to take action! Granted, sometimes it can take some time to warm up the writing muscle, but once we get going, we go and we do! We create our own words and then create the author platform to reach our readers whether that be by via an author website, podcast, or social media. But we take action and get things done!
