Today I’m restarting my word chain. I want to write everyday to create a habit of daily writing. Why? Because I want to write books for a living and to do that I need to write and create which sometimes I struggle with. So when willpower is in short supply, it’s only discipline that will carry you onward!
Although I did start a writing chain in May, I only got through 19 days of writing consecutively and then I was abroad for a week and I didn’t write. So what I really want to do is to create and build a solid habit of writing each day.
I started off in May wanting to write at least 500 words. By the end of the 19 days I was writing just over 1000 words a day with relative ease. So I think I’m making good progress and have been pleased with the results to date. I have also started to track my word count in an excel spreadsheet (rather than just noting it on my calendar) so that I can total up my word count over the year. I think it’s important to quantify goals which you can measure so that you can track how well you are doing.
It’s all very well writing words but now I also need to focus on WHAT type of words I am producing.
I wrote almost 20,000 words in May but all of it was for this blog. A lot of the words were not used either but that’s ok because we need to write through the rubbish before we can get to the good stuff.
I love writing this blog as it helps me to practise my writing, share my knowledge on the self publishing author journey and free my creativity. But at this point in time, it does not generate an income. That’s cool because I really want to write and self-publish a good book and that is what will bring in the revenue. So I need to focus on the primary goal of writing the book first.
In this month of June I have decided to get more focused with the type of words I produce because in reality we all only have limited time.
The purpose of this blog was to chart my journey and learnings to becoming an author entrepreneur and writing my first self published book remains number one priority. However I don’t feel I have been giving the book priority because I have not written any new words on my book. Part of the reason is because I needed a break from the book (I had got tired of it after writing almost 20k words in an epic 10 day sprint) and I also had to spend time getting this blog up and running.
I have also been spending quite a lot of time in learning about the craft of writing. So all in all, I am making good progress but I think its time to ramp up the progress. I enjoy blogging but I cannot allow it to take up time from the main purpose which is writing the book and getting it out there!
Sometimes it can become way too easy to get distracted from the things we should be doing. So for this month my goals will be:
- Continue writing a blog post daily (approx 500 words)
- Continue Posting 2 posts a week on this blog ( Mondays/ Thursdays)
- Write 1000 words per day on my book, aiming to complete the first draft by the end of this month.
Writing is an art but for those who want to make a living from your writing you also need to treat it as a business. And that means turning up daily with commitment and discipline. Motivation is overrated. It’s only discipline that can help you to achieve the goals you set out to achieve.
